Pediatric Neuropsychological Evaluations

Difficulty with emotions, social settings, and schooling can be normal experiences in development. However, it can also be a sign of an underlying neuropsychological disorder if they are causing dysfunction in the child’s behavior or thinking. If these symptoms or concerns are causing impairment and are noticed by teachers, family, or peers, then a Pediatric Neuropsychological Evaluation might be necessary.

Pediatric Neuropsychological evaluations can help you, medical providers, and teachers understand how the different areas of the child’s brain are working and can provide information on their areas of strengths and areas of weaknesses. Testing is usually recommended when there are symptoms or complaints involving memory, behavior, or other aspects of thinking.

The evaluation involves a review of relevant records (e.g., medical and psychiatric), a comprehensive clinical interview and neuropsychological testing (focused on the standardized assessment of attention, memory, language, executive function, and visuospatial abilities). Following the evaluation, a family conference will be held where test findings and treatment recommendations will be discussed with the parent(s), guardian(s), and/or family members.

Additional Information

A Pediatric Neuropsychological Evaluation is different from a Psychoeducational Evaluation or School Assessment that may be conducted at the child’s office or district. These assessments prioritize evaluating a child’s academic abilities and determine if Academic Accommodations or Special Education is needed. A Neuropsychological Evaluation is beneficial as it is more comprehensive. We focus on the child’s cognitive and behavioral function in their lives at home, at school, and all other settings. The strengths and weaknesses evaluated in the doctor’s report can be utilized to mediate their symptoms’ effects in the child’s life moving forward. Our neuropsychologists can diagnose neurodevelopmental disorders, learning disorders, mood disorders, psychiatric conditions, etc.

Our Pediatric Neuropsychologist can provide Intervention Recommendations to assist with the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) developed at the child’s school.
